The concept for this hilltop residence in Lafayette is based on a switchblade diagram. A 100 year-old oak tree is the focal point at the convergence of the two building components. The sleeping rooms and adjacent bathrooms, along with the garage, laundry room, stair tower and study make up the “handle” of the knife. The “blade” consists of the dining room, living room, kitchen, family room and office. The organization of the house clearly defines and separates the public and private realms within. The massing of the structure engages the topography and landscape, wrapping the hillside, providing breath-taking views of the valley below and the neighboring hills to the northwest.
